Digital Healthcare Should Save Time, Not Add Friction

Digital healthcare promises faster access to information, better coordination and more time for patient care. Yet anyone who works with several digital systems knows that technology can also create friction.

At HIMSS26 Europe, one recent example focused on something very ordinary: logging in. Healthcare IT News reported in August 2026 on biometric identity technology designed to let clinicians securely authenticate and access or leave hospital workstations as they move through the building.

The technology itself is only one example, but the problem it addresses is much bigger. If digital transformation asks healthcare professionals to spend more time signing in, switching between systems or repeating administrative steps, the technology may be technically successful while still making the working day harder.

Good digital healthcare should reduce unnecessary effort around care, not move that effort from paper forms to screens.

Small frustrations can become major workflow problems

A few extra seconds at a workstation may not sound significant. Across a busy shift, however, repeated logins, disconnected systems and duplicated data entry can add up.

Healthcare workers move between patients, rooms, devices and teams. Digital systems need to operate within that reality. A system designed for someone sitting at one desk all day may not work well for a nurse, doctor or therapist moving continuously through a clinical environment.

This is why usability is not simply a design preference. In healthcare, unnecessary friction can affect staff workload, attention and the amount of time available for patients.

Security and usability should not be treated as opposites

Healthcare systems must protect sensitive data. Strong identity controls and secure access are essential. But security measures also have to work in the environment where they are used.

The biometric access example presented at HIMSS26 Europe reflects an attempt to make secure authentication fit more naturally into clinical movement. Whether one specific technology is appropriate will depend on the organisation, but the principle is important: security processes should be designed around real workflows rather than added without considering their effect on staff.

If a secure system is extremely difficult to use, people may look for shortcuts. Good design can therefore support both safety and usability.

Digital transformation should begin with the problem

Healthcare organisations can sometimes start with a technology and then search for somewhere to use it. A stronger approach is to begin with the problem experienced by patients or staff.

Is information difficult to find? Are clinicians entering the same details in several places? Are handovers unclear? Are staff receiving too many alerts? Are patients being asked to repeat information that the organisation already holds?

Once the problem is clear, technology can be assessed against a practical question: does it make this process safer, clearer or easier?

Students need to learn to notice digital friction

Healthcare education often teaches learners how to use a system correctly. That is important, but future professionals should also learn how to evaluate the system around them.

A useful learning activity could ask students to map a digital workflow from the perspective of a patient and a healthcare professional. Where are delays introduced? Where is information repeated? Which steps are necessary for safety and which exist because systems are poorly connected?

This develops a different form of digital competence. Students are not only users of technology; they become thoughtful participants in improving digitally enabled care.

The human side of hybrid management

Hybrid management is partly about coordinating people across digital and physical settings. It is also about recognising how new systems affect the people expected to use them.

A digital change may alter responsibilities, communication patterns, workload and the pace of work. Managers and clinical leaders therefore need to involve staff, test processes and respond to problems after implementation.

Technology adoption is more sustainable when people understand why a change is being made and can see how it supports their work.

What this means for Hybrid Healthcare

Hybrid Healthcare places digital health technologies and management skills side by side. The reason is simple: a technology only delivers value when it works within real healthcare practice.

For students, this means learning to use digital tools while also asking better questions about workflow, patient experience, security, communication and implementation.

The future of healthcare will contain more technology. The goal should not be to make professionals spend more of their day managing technology. It should be to design digital systems that help professionals spend their time where it matters most: delivering safe, effective and human-centred care.
